1960 European Nations' Cup
The first ever European Football Championship was known as the 1960 UEFA European Nations Cup and was held in France with the final taking place at the Parc des Princes in Paris in front of just under 18,000 fans.
Like its future incarnations it was a knock out competition where there was a qualification process that consisted of 17 teams that had entered. Notable teams that did not enter the inaugural event include England, Italy and West Germany.
The 17 teams would each play home-and-away matches up until the semi-finals, whereby the final four teams in the competition would then move on to the final tournament. The host nation for the finals was then selected from the four qualifying teams.
The final four consisted of there Eastern block nations, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and France who hosted the event.
The first ever final
After beating France 4-5 Yugoslavia met the Soviet Union in the finals who had in turn defeated Czechoslovakia 3-0 in the semi finals.
The match was drawn 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and in extra time a 113th minute goal from Ponedelnik sealed the victory for Russia who won the game 2-1.

Even though there was only four games in the whole of the finals, the teams taking part still managed to score 17 goals in the competition. This gave the tournament an average of 4.25 goals per game..

In the match Yugoslavia versus France, the Yugoslavia striker Milan Galic became the tournaments fastest goal scorer when he scored in the 11th minute of the game. The record was overturned in the following Euro 1964 tournament.
