Euro 1968, Italy
This was the year that the title of the tournament was changed from the European Nations' Cup to the European Championship.
With the name change came a slight change in format over the two previous events with the two legged home and away knockout competition being replaced the group stages.
The teams that progressed to the finals were tournament veterans the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and first timers in the final England and Italy who were then chosen as the host nation for the tournament.
1968 Final
The 1968 final was between Italy, who at the end of extra time in their semi final match were still drawing with the Soviet Union. The game was decided by the flip of a coin with Italy the winners of the coin toss. They were then up against Yugoslavia who beat the England 1-0.
The final took place at the Stadio Olimpico in front of an 85,000 strong crowd, but after 120 minutes of play the game was a 1-1 draw. Thankfully this was decided by a coin toss nor penalties but instead the game was replayed two days later and 2 goals in the first half by Italy gave the host nation the Championship
Goal scorers of the tournament
During the four matches of the final there were only 7 goals scored which gave an average of 1.75 goals per game.
Top Goal Scorer
The top goal scorer was awarded to Yugoslavia's Dragan Dzajic who scored 2 goals during the tournament.
- Dragan Dzajic (Yugoslavia)
