Euro 1972, Belgium
The fourth UEFA European Championships repeated the format of the previous tournament in Italy in 1968, the final was played in Belgium.
During the qualification process for this Championships there were 32 nations taking part, in eight groups of four. The four qualifying teams were Belgium, West Germany, Hungary and once again the Soviet Union. The host nation was selected from these four countries.
1972 Final - West Germany 3 - 0 Soviet Union
The two teams that made it to the final were West Germany who beat hosts Belgium 2-1 and the Soviet Union who beat Hungary 1-0 in the semi finals.
The final took place at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels and was watched by over 43,000 spectators. Top scorer of the tournament Muller scored a goal in each half and was joined on the score sheet by Wimmer to emphatically beat Russia 3-0.

There was no rush to score goals during this European Championships and we had to wait until the 24th minute of the game between Belgium and Hungary when Raoul Lambert scored, this was matched by Gerd Muller who also scored in the same time in the West Germany versus Belgium match.
