Euro 1980, Italy
The 1980 European Championships was the second time that Italy had hosted the finals, the first time being for Euro 1968.
The format had its biggest change so far, for this tournament.. Previously only 4 teams had taken part in the finals, but for this run out it was increased to 8 teams.
The qualifying campaign changed slightly as 31 teams took part due to Italy being given automatic qualification as the host nation of the Championship.
The eight teams that qualified were:
- Belgium
- Czechoslovakia
- England
- Greece
- Netherlands
- Italy (automatically qualified as hosts)
- Spain
- West Germany
To accommodate the increased number of teams in the final two groups of four were created where each team would play all the other teams in their group. The winners of each group would then go through to the final, this eliminated the need for semi finals.
1980 European Championship Final
The two teams that met in the final were Group A winners West Germany and the winners of Group B, Belgium. The final took place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome watched by a crowd of 47,864.
