Euro 1988, West Germany
The two time winners of the European Championship were this time given the honour of hosting the event and therefore managed to avoid qualification process.
The same format that was used for Euro 1984 was applied for this tournament.

1988 European Championship Final
West Germany and the Soviet Union were winners of their groups and Italy and the Netherlands came through as the runners up. In the semi finals the Netherlands defeated West Germany 2-1 and the Soviet comfortably defeated Italy 2-0.
The final between the Soviet Union and the Netherlands took place at the Olympiastadion in Munich, with the match being watched by 72,308 fans. A goal in each from the Dutch side from Hullit and Van Basten respectively saw the Netherlands win the Championship for the first time.

Fastest goal
The fastest goal of the tournament belonged to Sergei Aleinikov who scored in 3 minutes during the Soviet Union versus England match. This equaled the record set by France's Michael Platini during Euro 1984.
