Euro 2004, Portugal
The 12th European Football Championship was selected to take place in Portugal for the first time in the tournaments history; it took place between 12th June and 4th July 2004.
As in the previous tournament 16 teams reached the finals after going through a qualification process which began in 2002. This time 50 teams battled it out and the victors were as follows:

There were quite a few surprises in the tournament when both Germany and Italy were knocked out in the group stages and the holders France were knocked out in the quarter finals by Greece.
2004 European Championship Final
The final of the tournament took place on 4th July 2004 between Portugal and Greece at the Estadio da Luz (Stadium of Light),in Lisbon, and it was watched by a crowd of 62,865.
Portugal got the finals by defeating the Netherlands 2-1 and also managed to score all the goals in that game thanks to an own goal by Andrade. Greece beat the Czech Republics by a goal in the 105th minute of their match to reach the final.
Most pundits expected an easy win for Portugal, who on paper easily outclassed the underdogs Greece but a solitary goal in the 57th minute from Angelos Charisteas was enough for Greece to win the 2004 European Championships.
