Euro 2012 Format
We now know the identity of all 16 teams competing in Euro 2012 as well as the make-up of all four Groups. The qualifying process went as predicted with all the major European nations securing their place in this summer's tournament. The real battles will commence in June when the Group Stage gets underway.
European Championship Group Stage
The 16 teams playing in the European Championship have been split into a total of four groups, with four teams in each group (A-D).
Group A: Poland, Greece, Russia, Czech Republic
Group B: Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal
Group C: Spain, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Croatia
Group D: Ukraine, Sweden, France, England
The top two teams in each group will then progress through to the knockout stages of the competition.
Euro 2012 Knockout Stages
After the group stages have come to a close the two best placed teams in each of the four groups will progress through to the Quarter-Finals of the tournament. The top placed teams of each group will be paired with the runners-up of another group, as follows:
- Winner Group A v Runner-up Group B
- Winner Group B v Runner-up Group A
- Winner Group C v Runner-up Group D
- Winner Group D v Runner-up Group C
The four winners will then play in the Semi-Finals, with the two victorious teams then battling it out for the trophy in the Euro 2012 Final on Sunday 1st July.
