Two expertly taken Mario Gomez goals gave Germany a deserved lead at the break. Holland made two attacking changes at the interval but could still not find a way past a stubborn German backline. Then in the 73rd minute their moment of inspiration arrived when Robin Van Persie struck a fierce right foot shot into the bottom corner. However, they were unable to find an equaliser, with Germany coming out on top yet again.
